Brief Interviews With Hideous Men

Brief Interviews With Hideous Men
by David Foster Wallace

Do you not just love that title? I love that title. I've had this book on my bookshelf for years. Years. I finally picked it up and started reading it, and I don't mind telling you that it was sheer torture for me to read.

I finally gave up about halfway through, and I'm the kind of person that will endure to the end, no matter how painful it is. I paid good money for this book, dang it, and by golly I'm gonna read it! Yes, I'm stubborn too. Well, I couldn't do it this time. I Just. Could Not. Do it. Any. Longer.

Wallace's style of writing and his subject matter was just too weird for me. It makes me think I must be a bonehead, because this book was on the National Bestseller list. Which means that a lot of people must have liked it, right? He was a little too deep at times, and some of his short stories went on and on and on and on with endless whining.

So think of this as a public service announcement. If you're curious about this book, get it at the library so you won't kick yourself for buying it.

  1. ha! I love that you posted about this book you didn't like! I have very little patience, and if I have a hard time making it through the first chapter, the book doesn't get read. Kuddos for trying to stick it out!

  2. Best sellers doesn't mean people actually read it. LOL Maybe they just liked the cover and title, too. LOL

  4. You know that saying "Don't judge a book by it's cover?" Well, I didn't know that the same could also be said for the title. Suzanne, seriously, aren't you just a little bit curious about the hideous men? Personally, I wanted to know if my ex boyfriend was in there.

  6. Hello!

Thanks for the comment on my blog!! You asked if I spent more time editing than I actually do taking the photos and the answer is a resounding YES! Some photographers hate the computer work, but I actually enjoy it and am constantly trying new things. If I stuck to what I already knew, I could probably do 2 hours of editing on a 1 hour shoot, but typically I spend 4-5 or up on each session :)

  10. I know what you mean, the time I have to read a good book is limited I'm not going to waste it on one I just don't get and don't want to read. Just read your Jill Scott posts below, thanks for the laugh!

  11. You stuck with the book longer than I would have. If a book doesn't "grab" me pretty quickly I am through with it!
